Do Essential Oils Influence Our Emotions?
Essential oils are a highly impactful tool for emotional wellness. When we inhale essential oils either from a diffuser or just from our hands, molecules bind with receptors in the neural olfactory pathways, which then fire impulses to the olfactory bulbs located at the base of the brain where the fragrance messages are interpreted and transmitted to the limbic system. The limbic system in the brain is also responsible for the release of different neurotransmitters, including influencing emotions. Essential oils have been shown to act on these structures of the brain to promote the production and release of various neurotransmitters which impact the nervous system and improve overall emotional wellness. Research has found that essential oils are able to cross the blood brain barrier and act as cerebral stimulants which in turn can improve neurotransmitter activity.
So because essential oils do support the brain in neuronal activity, yes they can influence our thoughts & emotions to improve our mood, energy, and outlook on life. Integrating essential oils in your daily routine can be so helpful and positive for you. Depending on what you most want to accomplish in your emotional wellness, is what oils you would want to use. The key is to use them often and regularly in your diffuser during the day. Because so many of you are the primary caretaker for your family, your clients, and your patients, you absolutely need to replenish your emotional wellness and sometimes we don't have to time to go to yoga, on a vacation, take a nap or do many of the other things that are essential as well to rejuvenating our minds, but essential oils is a simple & cost effective way to replenish us every single day at any time. The best thing is that with a aromatic diffuser, you can just turn it on while you are taking care of others as well, and you are not only rejuvenating yourself, but you are doing something positive for their brain as well!
Below I have created a .pdf file you can download to guide you in some daily protocols with using essential oils. What I usually do is choose one essential oil from the list for the morning, and add 4-6 drops into the diffuser for 4-6 hours. Then I will choose another oil from the list for the mid-day, evening, and again at nighttime. What I have found most people enjoy, is a citrus essential oil for the morning, a peppermint or other memory & learning, or focus oil mid-day (when we start to get sluggish), then for the evening an essential oil that comes from a tree like cedarwood, sandalwood, frankincense, Vetiver (this is a grass), etc, because of their grounding effects, and in the nighttime, an extremely calming oil like lavender, chamomile, ylang ylang, or clary sage to relax the mind for sleep. Having these natural aromatic compounds surround your life & daily routine, 100% help to improve your mood, support your brain activity and function, and most of all increase your emotional wellness!
